Wish You Could Simply Flush Fat Away?
Round It Out with Diet
To complement a sound liver support nutraceutical program, you need to follow a Pan Asian Modified Mediterranean (PAMM) type of eating plan. Call it a “diet” if you will, but I prefer to think of it as a healthy lifestyle approach to dining. The PAMM food choices are higher in protein and lower in high glycemic sugars. It’s a smart-medicine way to guide your food selections, and there’s been lots of information about them in earlier issues.
Healthy proteins—from organic free range meats to migratory sea salmon (especially from Alaska) to DHA fortified eggs—are great options to guarantee you’re getting those essential amino acids, especially the sulfa-based amino acids that support your liver.
I also like Dr. Gittleman’s fat flush plan to help “jump start” your liver. She recommends a cranberry juice/water mixture combined with psyllium or crushed up flaxseed. A hot water-and-fresh-squeezed lemon drink to assist liver metabolism also works. Another favorite liver flush among naturopathic physicians involves mixing 4–5 tablespoons of organic extra virgin olive oil with the juice of one fresh squeezed lemon to be taken at bedtime. For those of you with gallbladder disease, it may provoke uncomfortable contractions. This concoction can help stimulate bile duct activity that helps a “sluggish” liver to get going.
Getting your liver to function optimally is a key ingredient, not only for weight loss, but also for optimal health in general. If allowed to persist, an early problem can turn into jaundice. By then, it’s usually too late to save your liver, and maybe even your life. It’s critical to eliminate as many liver toxins as you can, and nourish yourself with the right foods and nutraceuticals to give your liver a fighting chance to do its job. And when you detox your liver, weight management becomes that much easier.
