A Good Liver Is Critical for Your Overall Health

Now, let’s turn back to Ann. Hers is a story that may apply to many of you. Ann’s main frustration was her weight—no matter what she did, she couldn’t lose any. She exercised, ate a prudent diet, and counted her calories all day long, but the scale wouldn’t budge.

Then one test we ran proved key: Her abdominal ultrasound confirmed a “fatty liver.”  I knew, and now so does she, that she really needed to “heal her liver” before she could start losing weight. And I dare say that many people may be in the same boat—your liver enzymes may be normal, your scans may not show any problem, but your liver may be struggling. Your liver can be 85–90 percent stressed and look problem-free—until something tips the scale and it’s too late.

The good news is, you can be proactive, and start a liver recovery plan. After taking Ann’s nutritional history, I laid out a straightforward game plan for her to assist in healing her liver:
Stop caffeine: it interferes with the absorption of nutrients in your food and supplements;
Stop alcohol: it’s toxic to the liver;
Stop high dose vitamin A (retinol palmitate) supplements:  greater than 15,000 IU daily places stress on the liver. A dose of less than 7,500 IU of beta carotene is okay;
Stop statin drugs: they’re major liver stressors;
Stop acetaminophen: it’s another liver stressor that may also injure your kidneys; and
Take liver supporting supplements.
