Once again, the media is on a rampage when it comes to vitamins and supplements…this time, reporting that vitamin E increases the risk of prostate cancer.

First of all, this is not some new study or new evidence regarding vitamin E. This vitamin E/prostate cancer study was performed years ago, and as I wrote on 10/11/2011 about the negative study in the Archives of Internal Medicine, the timing of the release of this “new breaking research” is really suspect since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is in the process of seeking more regulatory authority over the supplement industry.

Let me break it down for you. If you check the research (including this study that is now being reported), every time vitamin E has been found “harmful,” the studies used a synthetic form of vitamin E. However, it is crucial to note that vitamin E occurs as a complex, and thats why its important to use a natural source of “mixed tocopherols.”

Additionally, this same study found that there was no increase in the risk of developing prostate cancer when the vitamin E (the synthetic, isolated form) was taken with selenium. This should help demonstrate that, just like foods rich in various nutrients, vitamins work synergistically (like in high-quality multivitamin/mineral complexes), so they should be taken that way. To isolate them and/or synthetically create them and then try to substitute them for what occurs in nature, is akin to manufacturing highly purified, artificial compounds like drugs.

On the topic of prostate cancer, I want to note that Ive been saying for years that the PSA test for prostate cancer was totally useless and only led to increased disabilities and deaths because it isnt accurate and only puts more men into the system for questionable and dangerous treatment programs. During all this time, I was ridiculed, while organized medicine continued to claim the enormous life-saving benefits of the PSA test.

Now, due to overwhelming research data, the medical associations are retracting those recommendations and some are even saying the PSA test is worthless. Can you really trust the FDA, the American Medical Association, and other government agencies based on their past and current history?

Once again, I encourage you to continue taking natural vitamin E, ideally as part of a high-quality multivitamin/mineral complex so that it can work synergistically with other nutrients. There is absolutely no legitimate reason for you not to.
