While my research takes me around the world, I try to make a point to be home in America to celebrate the independence of our country.  Here in Kerrville, TX, like many small towns in America, July 4th is truly a homespun American holiday—nothing fancy, just a few parades and good old fashioned picnic fare.

But this year, we’re adding a new tradition to the mix…

For years, olive oil was been the “gold standard” when it comes to healthy cooking oils.  It’s still a far better choice than most oils out there.  But in recent years, macadamia nut oil has been making research news. Given its immense health benefits I think we’re going to be hearing a lot more about it.

Macadamia nut oil has even more heart-healthy monounsaturated fats than olive oil, and it’s a significant natural source of palmitoleic acid, which supports overall cardiovascular health.  It also contains an ideal healthy 1:1 ratio of heart- and brain-healthy omega-3s essential fatty acids, and immune-supporting omega-6s.

I don’t know if you’ve ever tasted macadamia nuts, but the oil is just as delicious.  It has a smooth, slightly nutty, buttery taste.  I’ve found it to be pretty versatile, too.  Since it has a high smoke point it’s easy to cook with, and it also tastes good cold over salads or pasta.

Here are some easy ways to add it to your summer menu:

·     Salad Dressing: Drizzle some macadamia nut oil and balsamic vinegar on your salad and sprinkle with salt and pepper, or try it in your salad dressing recipes.

·     Barbecue Marinades: Use it in all your favorite marinade recipes for chicken or beef before putting it on the barbecue.  It adds a rich delicious flavor, and is an excellent tenderizer.

·     Grilled Vegetables:  Skewer your favorite fruits and vegetables—such as cut zucchini, mushrooms, chunks of onion, chunks of red and green pepper, pineapple, and cherry tomatoes.  Brush with macadamia nut oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste, and place on the grill until done.

Whatever you have planned for your July 4th celebration, I hope you’re able to celebrate it with good friends, family, and neighbors.  It’s an excellent time to reconnect and enjoy some of your favorite traditions, as well as start some healthy new ones.

Now it’s your turn: Do you have a favorite Fourth of July tradition at your house?
