In winter, the cold, dry atmosphere combined with less sun exposure can be a real problem, especially if you suffer from chronic seborrhea or dandruff. Fortunately, you can not only relieve this irritating and unsightly skin condition, but treat the source of the problem so it doesn’t keep flaring up each time we enter the colder months.

Many people think dandruff is dry skin, but it actually results from over-secretion of oil in your scalp, called sebum. This excess oil turns rancid and breaks down into a chemical irritant that causes the skin cells to multiply at a higher rate than normal. These new cells begin to stack up and cause the familiar clumping and flaking we call dandruff. There are two general ways of dealing with the problem.

One way to combat dandruff is to stop the excess oil from becoming rancid and irritating to the skin...

To do that, you want to use antioxidants. Some shampoos for dandruff, such as Selsun Blue and Head and Shoulders, contain antioxidants. They work not by cleaning the scalp and hair but by stopping the oils from turning rancid.

Vitamins and minerals that work as antioxidants are vitamins A, E, zinc and selenium—which can be taken orally or rubbed into the skin. All of these can become toxic if you take too large a quantity orally. If you decide to try this route, do so under the guidance of your nutritionist or doctor. Other natural substances have been used successfully to “blot, absorb or neutralize” the excess oil. These include oatmeal or bran paste, corn meal, warm apple cider vinegar, beaten eggs and various herbal teas.

The other method of approaching the problem involves getting to the source—the glands’ production of too much oil...

With dandruff your hormone production is out of balance, usually in the direction of too many male hormones. The answer is not to take additional hormones to counteract it, but to concentrate on strengthening and rebuilding your adrenal glands so they can balance the situation naturally.

Anything that places a further burden on your adrenals will make your condition worse. Sugar and stress will deplete the adrenals faster than anything. Sugar depletes the B-vitamins which the adrenals need desperately, so get completely off sugar and sugar products. You also want to minimize your exposure to stressful situations until your adrenals are strengthened.

Nutritionally you can help your adrenals by taking a B-complex that has 50 to 100 mg of each B vitamin. Also, between 2,000 and 5,000 mg of a vitamin C complex along with 10 percent of that amount of bioflavonoids, and an adrenal glandular supplement will help. Learn everything you can about easing the load on your adrenal glands.

Use some of the natural methods I’ve mentioned to ease the symptoms while you start working on the adrenals. You can get some temporary relief while working on the permanent solution!

Now its your turn: Have you found a way to fight dandruff?
