When it comes to digestion we hear a lot about the probiotics, which are powerful bacteria that work in your intestines. But sometimes the foods you eat can cause discomfort or indigestion. The reason is that our bodies produce fewer digestive enzymes as we age—which is why more and more foods can land on your digestive trouble list.

In fact, a lot of people who suffer from indigestion, gas, and bloating are really suffering from an enzyme deficit…

* When proteins aren’t digested properly in your stomach, gas-forming bacteria multiply quicker than election-year promises. Bacterial overgrowth leads to horrendous gas problems. Eventually, low stomach acid will also result in a protein deficiency. Your body then begins to rob protein from joint surfaces and transport it to other areas where it may be needed. This can lead to arthritis.

* Another good example is lactose, which is found in milk products. In order to digest lactose, you must produce the enzyme lactase—which is deficient in many individuals. Undigested lactose can result in indigestion, gas formation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain and distension. In other words, “lactose intolerance” could just as easily be named “lactase deficiency.”

* A lot of folks also develop troubles with beans and cruciferous vegetables, which can make healthy eating a real challenge. This is where enzymes like raffinose, stachyose, and verbascose come to the rescue.
