7 Ways to Keep Fall Allergies at Bay

Fall is one of my favorite seasons. The changing of the leaves and the cooler temperatures enjoyed in many areas of the country make this one of the most beautiful, most comfortable times of the year. But the cooler weather can be a challenge for your sinuses, when plants release allergens and other irritants, and the damp air is a haven for mold.
The following tips and techniques should be helpful in promoting sinus health:
1. Take it from the bees. I mean that literally. Propolis, found in beehives, has been shown to help keep allergies at bay and increase your ability to enjoy the outdoors year-round. If your health food store doesn’t carry propolis, there are many good mail-order sources. I generally get mine from CC Pollen Co. (phone 800-875-0096 or www.ccpollen.com).
2. Drink herbal teas. One of the more common signs of sinus trouble is a buildup of mucus that can adversely affect your ability to breathe easily. You can fight the buildup with herbal teas, particularly fenugreek, slippery elm, and flaxseed. Feel free to add a small amount of honey or xylitol to sweeten the taste.
3. Clear your sinuses. Sinus cavities are dark, warm, moist caverns that provide a perfect environment for harboring bacteria and other infectious matter. Many times a good "rinsing" will clean and help disinfect the area.
4. Maintain good dental health. Believe it or not, an infected tooth can affect how well your sinuses work and how easily you’re able to breathe. This might be a good time to schedule a visit with your dentist.
5. Go organic. Conventionally grown food is often produced using chemicals that can irritate your entire body, but particularly your respiratory system. As much as possible, eat natural and organic foods so that your exposure to those irritating chemicals and allergens is limited.
6. Watch your pets. During this time of year, your pets may be spending a lot more time outdoors and bringing in any number of irritants. If you have an air purifier, please use it.
7. Hum. Sounds strange, I know. But researchers at Sweden’s Karolinska Hospital have discovered that humming increases ventilation in the sinus cavities—which helps promote healthy breathing, as well as a healthy respiratory system.
Now its your turn: Have you found a way to keep fall allergies at bay?
