Fall is one of my favorite seasons. The weather is crisp and inviting, which makes me feel more invigorated and energized. Plus, the leaves on the trees are changing.

But these changes in weather—despite how good it feels—can also add extra stress to your immune system, which is one of the hardest working systems in your body. Plus, before long Thanksgiving will be here, signaling the joy and stresses of the busy holiday season.

One of your best defenses is to get plenty of rest. Plus, you can add these four practices to your daily routine to help make this your healthiest season ever.

1. Wash Your Hands Frequently: Good hygiene has been scientifically proven to raise your bodys levels of its most important and abundant protein-albumin. The higher the albumin, the better it is for your immune system.

2. Eat Foods that Fortify Your Immune System: A healthy diet is critical for keeping your immune system strong. In the fall and winter, I especially recommend theses powerful immune-boosting foods: mushrooms, sweet potatoes, red peppers, garlic, home-made yogurt, and ginger.

3. Take These Immune-Boosting Nutrients for Extra Support

* Elderberry Extract:
The active ingredients in elderberries help support immune health. I recommend a remarkable elderberry extract developed by Israeli scientists called Sambucol (which comes from the Latin name for elderberry, Sambucus nigra). I recommend taking 4 g daily of elderberry extract.

* Vitamin C:
When you need extra immune support, I recommend you take 500 to 1,000 milligrams every 2 hours. When Vitamin C is taken with zinc, propolis and elderberry extract, a good daily maintenance dose is 100 mg.

* Zinc: Helps quench free radicals in your body and promote immune function. The recommended daily dose for zinc when taken with vitamin C, propolis, and elderberry extract is 10 mg.

* Bee Propolis: Research suggests that this waxy resin used by bees to waterproof their hives has immune supporting properties. The recommended daily dose when taken with elderberry extract, zinc, and vitamin C is 75 mg.

4. Soak Your Toothbrush: If youre under the weather, soak your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide before using it. It doesnt do much good to knock out the "bugs," and then turn around and reintroduce them into your system with a contaminated toothbrush.

I consider each of these immune boosters to be "cheap insurance" to help you stay healthy this season and beyond.

Now its your turn: What do you do to boost your immune system?
