H1N1 (Swine Flu) Deaths Hit 10,000

The CDC announced today that H1N1 (swine) flu-related deaths hit 10,000 during the week of November 29-December 5. In addition, more than 213,000 people have been hospitalized, and more than 50 million people have been sick with this particular strain. These figures represent the CDCs estimates, based on surveys of patients, physicians, and hospitals.
Unfortunately for us all, it looks like the CDC is playing games with their statistics. The official H1N1 flu Situation Update page shows "only" 33,000 hospitalizations and 1,445 deaths through December 5.
Its hard to know what to believe here. News from family, friends, and coworkers indicates that plenty of people have come down with swine flu. Few of them went to the doctor (which is usually the best course--your doctor cant really do very much for the flu), so they didnt get counted in the official numbers. The assumption is that just about anyone whos had the flu so far this year had H1N1.
Theres no real need to be more concerned about swine flu than you are about the regular seasonal flu. Just follow the same sensible precautions you should be taking every day: get plenty of rest, wash your hands just like Mom told you, and take 2,000 to 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily.
