In an earlier post, I recommended that readers think hard about whether or not to get the flu shot each year. Apparently, even doctors dont believe that flu shots work. A recent report from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases said that fewer than half of all health care professionals choose to get vaccinated against seasonal flu each year.

With this years flu, particularly the swine flu, many organizations are requiring that their employees get vaccinated. If you cant avoid the vaccine, there are a couple things you should know. Here’s what I’d suggest you do if you find that you MUST get a flu vaccine:

Prepare your body

Every day for a month prior to your flu vaccine, take
  • 100 mg of standardized ginseng extract (Ginsana)
  • 1,200 mcg of vitamin B12
  • 25,000 IU of vitamin A.
In one study, individuals given the ginseng extract for four weeks before the shot and eight weeks afterward exhibited twice the activity in their natural killer cells and 60 percent higher production of antibodies when compared to a group that didn’t take ginseng. Additionally, only 15 out of 114 individuals taking the ginseng came down with the flu, compared to 42 of 113 individuals who didn’t receive the ginseng.

Choose your poison wisely

The CDC predicts that, of the nearly 200 million or so doses of H1N1 flu vaccine that they expect to become available, about half will be produced with the mercury preservative, thimerosal, and half without. If you have a choice of which type of vaccine you receive, try to minimize your exposure to thimerosal, the mercury-containing preservative still used in many flu vaccines.

These vaccine sources are completely mercury-free:
  • FluMist nasal vaccine
  • Fluzone single-dose syringe
  • Afluria single-dose syringe.
These vaccine sources are low in mercury:
  • Fluvirin single-dose syringe
  • Fluarix single-dose syringe.
These vaccine sources contain approximately 25 mcg of mercury per dose:
  • All vaccines that are drawn from a multi-dose vial.
If the vaccine you receive has thimerosal , take steps to get it out of your body as promptly as possible. The easiest and most inexpensive way to remove (or "chelate") toxic metals from your nervous system and body tissues is to eat fresh cilantro.

Simply add fresh cilantro to your everyday foods or eat a couple of teaspoons of cilantro pesto a day for two or three weeks.

Cilantro Pesto
1 clove garlic
1/2 cup almonds, cashews, or other nuts
1 cup packed fresh cilantro leaves 2 tablespoons lemon juice
6 tablespoons olive oil
Put the cilantro and olive oil in blender and process until the cilantro is chopped. Add the rest of the ingredients and process to a lumpy paste.
